Local surfy historian, FDNY and Jones Beach lifeguard James Rooney reached out regarding an old Shipworm post on Long Island surfing pioneer, Bill Mullahey as mentioned in Tom Blake's essential Hawaiian Surfriders 1935:
'There are mentions of Bill Mullahey the Jones Beach lifeguard lieutenant that helped introduce surfboards to Jones Beach as rescue equipment. Bill's family were from New York city and settled on Long Island in Valley Stream. Bill's father ventured to San Francisco and then Honolulu where Bill grew up surfing in Waikiki as a member of the Outrigger canoe club. When Bill went to college he attended Columbia University 1928-1933. He worked as a Jones Beach lifeguard from 1929-1934, before heading back to Honolulu Hawaii and helping establish the Waikiki Beach patrol. He went on to work for Pan Am airways and ended up as one of their Vice Presidents.'
