In LA this weekend...

"Ron Stoner's images captured the essence of California's surfing culture in a time before parking meters, overcrowded lineups and the overhyped commercialization of the surfing world we know today; training his lens on the balmy beaches, bikini-clad girls, and achingly beautiful waves of Southern California in the full Technicolor they deserved. When Stoner set up his Century 1000mm lens beachside to shoot, all the hot locals would paddle out to show off their moves. Stoner turned these guys into heroes and legends in the beginning pages of Surfer magazine. Then, at the zenith of his career, Stoner stumbled off this sunny stage into drug use and mental illness. He was barely working by 1970. By 1977 he was declared missing. In 1991 he was declared dead."

Ron Stoner's original prints will be on display at Mollusk Surf Shop in Venice, beginning February 23rd through April 20th, with an opening reception on the 23rd from 7 - 10pm.
